Some great info already mentioned.
Can't add much but a 'picture tells a 1000 words'.
This wash layer was Central Qld gemfields. A grey powdery layer containing the 'wash'.

I'm thinking of joining the Illawarra Lapidary Club, so I can be 100% sure, and to learn more.

K-Dizzle dom105 I think is a member of the Illawarra club. He has fossicked quite a bit for sapphires and could help identify your stones. Try sending him a personal message and he could also give you details of the Illawarra club.
