Petrified Tree Fern
« on: July 25, 2015, 09:03:46 AM »
Hello All,

I have found this piece of what I think is petrified tree fern out near Miles, Qld. I am interested in getting this polished but am not sure wether to have it cut into multiple slices or have the entire rock polished.

Has anyone had any experience with this type of specimen?

Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Nice pick up, looks like fern to me, mate i would dome it first to get a good idea of the pattern  and to see how solid it is.

If its not pitted or cracky  you might be able to slice it for a cab or free form on a thin trim saw

Thanks very much for the info. I'm pretty chuffed about this find. Will be great to get it worked and see the quality.  :)

Nice find Brooksy  beers
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Congrats beers , that looks a very nice bit of fern. I'd just cab/polish the top of it. Nice keeping it as a good size, unless you were looking to sell it, then slice it up. You could join a local club and polish it yourself. You are in a great area, must be nice having local knowledge of where to find fern there. We stopped and looked at that amazing collection at the Miles historical village a couple of years ago.

Cheers

Thanks everyone. I am loving being out in this area at the moment. I also need some help with the attached picture  ???

Has anyone seen something like this. Could it be aquatic/coral based?

Give it a good clean.  At the moment all I could guess would be ironstone concretions.

Iron concretions would be my ID too, probably pyrite crystals that have eroded away and just left the iron cementing the stone together.

Nice fern Brooksy. Depends what you want from it. I agree with R&R, you'd get a few slabs for cabs from it, polish it complete as a freeform for display or sometimes I will polish part so you can see the original and the finished product. Personally I would be slabbing.

The other item looks metallic. Is it heavy? Waxy?
