Hi
My name is Sue and I have just joined this forum. Can anyone tell me if fossicking is still allowed at Lowmead Qld. If it is, can you camp on site?

welcome to the forum Sue,

Am not familiar with the Queensland fossicking sites so cannot help you but hopefully one of our QLD members will know more and reply soon.

A quick google search didnt show up too much.  This old mud map which may or may not still be relevant:

Might be worth ringing the Bundaberg Tourist Information Centre - (07) 4153 8888

cheers

ON second thoughts, it might be better to call the Gin Gin Tourist Centre - being inland, they might be a bit less focused on turtles and the Barrier Reef:

Gin Gin Regional Visitor Information Centre
Mulgrave Street, Gin Gin
Telephone: 07 4153 8888
Fax: 07 4153 8880

cheers

Hi Sue,

Welcome to the forum.

I have heard that you can find Amethyst at Lowmead, but to date no-one I have soke to that told me this has given me any idea of where to find them or if you can camp there etc, all they said was they were sure it is on private property.

I guess going on Leahs Link of the mud map, that would be the best start and if on private Property you could talk to the owners about access etc. Or as suggested the Gin Gin Tourist information people. Or perhaps if they don't know, then you could call the Miriam Vale Information Center on 07-49745428.

Take Care,
Deb ;D

Hi Sue,
Have not been to Lowmead but when I asked a Queensland fossicker was told that the spot had been mined with a bulldozer a while back. :(  All the best with your enquires.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Hi Everyone
Thanks for the information on Lowmead. I have seen some nice pieces of amethyst from this area so we decided to give it a go. Just spent two days there but only found a few bits of colour. In two places where I was digging I came across rusty tin! Not a good sign. The place looks like a war zone with craters everywhere. Hard to tell where it hasn't been dug. We called into the pub and got final directions and camped on site. Not a place I would go back to.
Should have stayed home (Rubyvale) and dug our claim instead!
Sue :)

Thanks for the info Sue.  Looks like another places to cross off my list.  I guess I'm not that surprised .... I've got some very old mud maps of the location so it's probably been gone over for decades.
Regards, Paul
