Visited Tingha last week and found plenty of smoky quartz. The piles were all damp from recent rain and fairly easy to dig but if you waited for the bulldozer to create a new mound the stones were very easy to find and collect. $10 is well worth it I would have thought. Interesting to see some of the workers collecting stones from the drop zone and then pass them out to some of the fossickers...a nice touch.

Thanks for the post mate.

I've read in a few places it was closed as of 30/4.  We are still planning on a couple of nights there next week but no idea where to go if the mine is closed.

Can you tell me where you read about Tingha Sands closing??

I am due to leave Melbourne tonight to drive to Tingha but it may be pointless or wasted trip if Tingha Sands is already closed or not allowing fossickers in anymore!!

I heard it from a customer.  I heard from that bloke that his wife/kids do not want to allow fossickers anymore - he had visited about a month ago in their last week of operation.  But heard from someone else since that there is a complication with permission to mine sand (possible native title issue) and this was reason - they were hoping to get it sorted but had not happened yet.  I think you may be able to get access to fossick but as they are not mining, there are no big sand heaps to go through.

Cannot really vouch for any of this - was just what I heard.  Best to call them directly and ask or contact visitor information centre in Inverell.

cheers

I sent a message to the Inverell info centre last night.  sent at 10pm and got a reply about 10mins later :-) they said the mine is not operating but you can still fossick at the site.  They also said there are sites at Stannifer for fossicking for crystals.

Following was posted on another Forum
Hi All, We are the new owners of Tingha Sands since End August 2018. We do not allow fossicking at all. Insurance costs are astronomical for that type of business. I have had hundreds of phone calls and majority are very understanding, but we do not appreciate the attitude of some people when told no fossicking and they constantly question our decision and get angry with us. We standby our decision For NO FOSSICKING. We are concentrating on making the sand business work for us.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Owners at Tingha Sands have been quite definite about this decision and putting it out there as much as they can.  I can appreciate that this is disappointing for fossickers but it is their right to make this decision.

Suggest people wanting to look for quartz in the Tingha area contact the people at the Tingha Caravan Park - those guys are very helpful and can point you in the right direction for spots to look, etc.

Shaun at Jelly Bean Junction Stannifer has good info and maps for finding Crystals in the Stannifer area. Top bloke always willing to help the fossicker.  :)
