For the Tassie fossickers
« on: February 08, 2016, 03:06:00 PM »
The ABC guy sent me this article today - thought it might be of interest to those in our network:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/offtrack/how-to-hand-mine-tasmanian-sapphires/7137240

Link to the audio is at the bottom of the page.

Thanks Leah. A good read. I'm looking forward to heading into the nth east and hopefully find some sapph's whilst down at the Gemboree. This is really whetting my appetite! :D

Good read but would have change a few words :

hand mining gear  ... to ... fossicking gear ... or ... sieves

the best place to put something valuable is in your mouth. ... to  ...
the best place to put something valuable is in a pouch or plastic bottle.

That way you do not send the hard core greens into a frenzy or yourself into fits from possibly ingesting mercury.  :)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Yes - agree with both suggestions but it is obviously aimed at a readership that doesnt know anything about it. A positive spin at least.

Mostly the fossicker community are ignored so some positive press is welcome.

Dont know how the ABC guy thought to send us the link but good to hopefully expose to a few more readers.

cheers

That's what the creeks look like but it's hard to find good cutters. A lot of work for little reward usually. Heaps of small sapphire, you get some topaz, zircon and big spinel.
