where to begin?
« on: April 16, 2016, 01:28:25 PM »
Hi. I am completely new to this. Im basically a long time admirer looking to get my hands dirty. I'll be  having a dig around on private property near mudgee soon and frankly i have no idea where to start looking. any tips? its a very rocky hilly piece of land. do i start at the top or the bottom? how deep do i need to go? i know there is gold  in the atea but what else would i expect to find? thanks.

meganphut welcome to ALF  :)

Do you plan to use a detector or test sample an old mine sites mullock heaps?
Is there water available for panning?
Have a chat to the local lapidary club or metal detector group for advice.
Make sure you know the mining history of the property.
Take someone with experience with you.

Besides the gold you are seeking you might find quartz including crystals, a mine shaft, audit or trench or even a snake so take care.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Welcome to ALF Megan. To increase your chances of success, it is good to head into areas known to produce gemstones. Those with the best local knowledge would be your local lapidary club. They can provide lots of advice, encouragement and company in your hunt.

Hope you do well in your search.

Hello meganphut,
Welcome to the forum.  There have been sapphires found in the Mudgee area, mainly I think in the Cudgegong River. Not sure  if the place you have access to is anywhere near it.  If there is a creek it is probably a good place to start but you never know if you have a good look around.  There are a few threads on this forum about the area but I haven't read them.  If you type Mudgee in the search box in the top right corner they will come up.

Good luck, hope you find something nice.

G'day and welcome to the forum
Cudgegong river is a great place to start that's if your any where near it
along with what Crocket mentioned you can also find Diamonds there
there small and opaque like small frosted marbles
though you need to move a lot of wash to find them
Cheers Harry
