Taking the kids fossicking these hols
« on: June 25, 2016, 07:00:30 PM »
Wanting to take my 13 and 15 year old boys fossicking around Lithgow around 11 - 16 July.  We know nothing about what to look for and we have no tools. Please give us advice or is their a group we can join? They are good boys, trying to get them away from electronics. I'm also a Scout Ldr so love the outdoors.

I live in Lithgow but don't know much about local fossicking. There are other forum members who can tell you about the Oberon district.
Hope it all comes together for you.

Hi,

There is not a lot from what I am aware of around Lithgow.  THis forum is great in that you can just search 'Lithgow' and peruse a lot of the threads (do the same for Oberon).  My perception is there is a lot more sandstone around Lithgow and it is on the edge of the granite country where good stuff can occur but if it is crystals and gems you are after there isn't much - you have to get a little more west in the more proper granite and it all starts to happen.

There is a lot more around Oberon.  Again search these forums there is a wealth of information.  Also the tourist info centre at Oberon is actually very good, can give you maps, and they have sieves etc used for finding sapphires and for a gold coin they have an area where I think they show you how to do it and they do put a few little sapphires in there.

There seems to be lots of fossicking extending more around Orange / Bathurst way as well but not as well disclosed.

In terms of clubs I''m not sure which ones are active or if there is a club in Lithgow but fairly sure there is a Blue Mountains club and one at Orange.  Even though you may not get to all meetings you'll find out about field trips and / or meet members with local knowledge.

If you also want to get an idea about using sieves etc then there are some good clips on youtube.  Just google stuff like Sapphire fossicking Australia etc and in particular (from memory) Liz Kreate has some great fossicking clips.

I should have mentioned my own videos and blogs (see below to get started!) but they're all about New England fossicking.

There is a list of lapidary clubs that could help listed here http://gemlapidarycouncilnsw.org.au/clubs/

As for Oberon there are public fossicking areas listed with the Oberon information centre. If you intend to look else where in State forests then you will need a fossicking permit from State Forests.

Make sure you dress up warm. It gets really cold at Oberon.  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.
