Hi from Beechworth
« on: September 17, 2016, 06:39:41 PM »
Hi, I am new to lapidary but know a bit about jewellery, and silversmithing. I have lived permanently in Beechworth for over 20 years and have accumulated some nice stones etc. About to take the plunge and start cutting and polishing stones to put into my own design jewellery, and do some carving. I am a full time gold miner, running my own small mining business in the Beechworth area.
I also do a bit of work in Papua New Guinea training artisanal gold miners over there, and hope to do some gemstone prospecting in the near future too.
Anyway hope to meet some of you on the gemfields one day.

Proudly digging up Australia.

Welcome to ALF Woolshedjack.  There is some good fossicking in your area. Good luck on the cutting and polishing.
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Thanks Jamo. Yes there is some good fossicking here. We have also had a succession of flood over the last few months so it is even better at the moment. Look forward to talking with other members too.

Welcome to the forum WoolshedJack. You certainly live in a great back yard cobber, plenty of choices for fossicking for gem and gold. One of my favorite  haunts. I hope you've been enjoying your attempts at cutting and polishing your finds. There sure is some beautiful rich yellow citrine from that way that comes up great after faceting. ( Check out the picture of my portuguise cut citrine I got from John Goldworthy)  By any chance have you caught up with John Goldworthy from Stoneage Gems? He's a great wealth of local information and he probably could point you in the right direction for a lapidary club or faceting guild! Hope to see you about there in the creeks or hills? Will also be looking forward to seeing pics of your polished stones.  ::) :)

Cheers  beers

I was talking to John just 2 days ago as we were both involved in the search for a missing    6 y.o boy. I have known John for many years. I have a nice collection of local rocks and gems which has been growing for many years. Now time to do something with them.

A very good outcome with the 6 yr old boy. There is some really difficult terrain around McFeeters Rd, especially around near the falls.  Say hi to John when you see him next.

Cheers
Mario  ;) :)

Hello.  There has been mention about a lapidary club in beechworth area....just thought I would point out that there is one in Albury.   I am a member.  We have several local members that frequent beechworth and even live nearby.  Relatively cheap to join the club and meets regualrly on saturdays for cabbing and facetting.   Call into clubrooms to join up.
Email if you need more info.

Thanks for the info. I am aware of the Albury club, but sadly there is no club in Beechworth. I will come along to the clubrooms in Albury on a Saturday , and join up. Look forward to a catch up.

great.....be sure to bring some pretty rocks with you as we all luv to look at rocks and share knowledge.  Football Grandfinal weekend leaves the club pretty empty (just thought I would mention this) as its coming up.  The club opens at 12 noon and goes until 4pm on saturdays.....there are other days its open as well and you might find these better for you.  Facetting is typically on sat and tuesday avo but you need some experience with cabbing prior to doing facetting (requirement of club rules) if you have not done any facetting before.
