Query about Murwillumbah
« on: September 18, 2016, 09:11:49 PM »
Hi, I don't know if I'm in the right tab but I'm trying to find out what if anything I have on my property? I have 40acres on Farrants hill near Murwillumbah. There is a number of creeks and waterfalls loads of gravel and I don't know what to look for, lol!
If anyone could help to steer me in the right direction I would be very grateful.
Thanks Jeremy

Hi jeztruck and welcome to ALF.  :)

Have no information for east of Murwillumbah but plenty for the other directions.  :(
At a guess quartz crystals and chalcedony possible in the gravels.

You could also check with
Murwillumbah Gemstone, Mineral & Geology Club.
31 Riverview St. (2484).

 :)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

That's an easy one JT, grab a bucket and rake and head down to a decent gravel patch on the creek. Scratch through the gravels and pick out anything that looks crystalline, banded, shiny, colourful, see through or unusual. When the buckets half full bring it back and take some photos. Put the photos up on this forum and we'll tell you if theres anything worthwhile amongst it.

Theres also a chance that smaller, heavier goodies might be hiding so, some sieving and panning gravels behind rock bars or boulders might also be advisable but you probably don't have the gear at this point so start with the easy stuff

Cheers,
GR

Welcome to the Forum Jeztruck :D... Murwillumbah area is a hidden Gem waiting to be discovered.... Not much Exploration was carried out by the Mining Company's due to all the National Parks and limited access around the Area, but you have Massive Volcanic activity which you need for goodies to be made buy mother nature. :D... Pockets of Crystals here and there, Thundereggs, Agate, even Volcanic Opal and Gold....  all sorts of goodies have been found around your area.... you just have to be the first to find them is the hardest part ::)

As Gem Ranger suggested, Find some interesting things, clean them and post pics of them on here for your answers.... or I could always come down and have a look 8)... ;D ;D

Now that I have had a google of your place Jeztruck, When they were building the tunnels for the new highway, I was told by some plant operators that they hit a few pockets of Crystals, especially at St Helena Hill... and instant dismissal if you were caught 'STEALING' them. :o.. All sent off to be crushed on site for nice crushed Quartz for their Landscaping on the new road... and Ballina landscaping supplies  ::)

Gemster....

That is just wrong.  The Environmental lobby should be up in arms.  Plant operators should not be allowed to destroy resources like that.  It just means we have to dig  oreholes lookingfor good material when it would otherwise just have been there for the picking.
