In need of some expert opinions.. sapphire.
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:18:07 AM »
Hi there everyone!  :)
Im only new to this forum.. but i have spent many, many hours researching and have always found myself back reading through all the invaluable  knowledge that gets shared here (thanks everyone!). My partner and i  are only pretty new to the world of fossicking and lapidary but we have absolutely fallen in love with all that it entails! I was hoping someone out there might be able to offer some opinions or possible ideas of what may be able to be done with this bigger piece of sapphire we found on our first trip to the Rubyvale region, whether or not there may be a star in there amongst it all or maybe it should just be left the unique specimen it is?.. its 120 carats. Would love to hear back from anyone! Much appreciated. I have posted 4 or 5 photos in the gallery under the title 120ct Sapphire (hopefully i have done this right and everyone can see it). Thanks again.

Hi Specmaster and welcome to the forum!

You'll need to post a picture in the Gallery and just note in the thread you've posted it.  Everyone will check it out and you'll get lots of feedback.  2 or 3 photo's in different light and angles maybe ideal.

Hi Specmaster,
Good find and photos pity its not clear blue you could retire. I have posted a photo of one idea which my fossicking mate Mudpuddler made up in silver for a pendant. Sort of faceted, flat cut two sides with a 45* bevel around the edge and thin girdle. You just have to take up faceting and silver work for a hobby.
                                                            beers Ted

Hi Ted.

Thank you! It's always a bit of a bummer when they're not that clear crystal your after... this one was just was exciting for me none the less.. first nice size stone with some character  :) And thanks again for posting the picture of the pendant you had done. Looks great. Think a flat slice could be a possibility in this stone if it couldn't be cabbed to star. And in the process of of getting into the faceting! Loving it so far.. just need to get the gear!

Thanks.
