Cutter/s found, what next?
« on: April 03, 2017, 05:06:10 PM »
Hi, from a total newbie.

I see all sorts of posts around the forum and info on Google about digging for and even finding good stones/cutters etc. but very little about what comes next.
As one who is principally interested in fossicking/rockhunting but not very interested in the intricacies of doing lapidary work, my question is this. If one happens to be lucky enough to find a stone that looks like it might have some potential, what comes next? How can one get an assessment of whether it might be worth cutting and, if so, how to find someone to do the work, costs involved, etc.

Anything to ease my total ignorance would be very much appreciated.

JohnA

Welcome JohnA. Your first stop should be your local lapidary club. They should have the expertise to put you on the right track as to whether its a cutter or not. A lot of clubs also run field trips where you can indulge your need for fossicking. If you don't have one close, there is a company in Thailand called Lamberts who will assess and cut your stone for a fee. Groogle 'Lamberts Gems' and you should be able to find them. If it's a good sized stone and you don't trust the postage system, there are cutters on this forum that should be able to help you out.

Hi, Bucket

Thank you for the helpful reply. I see there is a lapidary club in Mordialloc Vic which is not too far from where I stay when I'm in Oz. I've also seen an ad from gemcutters in Sri Lanka that seems interesting. Have you heard anything about them??

Cheers,

John

I can't help you with the Sri Lankan cutters, I've only used Lamberts and was very happy with the results. Some of the members of this forum are from Mordialloc club and I've been to a couple of their shows when I'm in Melbourne, they seem very active and have a heap of knowledge. What area are you from?

I'm from Prahran - or,at least, that's where my son lives. I visit and stay with him once a year from Vietnam where I live at present. Hence the reason for my time constraint in that my annual visit takes place in November/ January so my maiden fossicking trip will have to take place in that time frame.
Thanks again for your interest.

Personally, I had many such situations that I needed an opinion about my find.
Then I always used the help of forum members.
I was taking photos that I uploaded to them.

+1 on Lessi's answer. John, just post some close up photos of the rough and we'll be able to give you a better idea of what to do with your finds :)

Thanks, Lessi and Gem Ranger for your input. If I do manage to find something interesting and there is no expert in close range I'll try the photo option. My real question, being the supreme optimist, is how does one go about getting a promising stone cut??
