Welcome to the forum watty

It would help us a bit if we knew what type of faceting machine.

Gemmasta machines used a sewing machine motor with a Thyristor for the speed controller. Thats really just a light dimmer.
The sewing machine motor is a brush type motor which are fairly common in all sorts of appliances.

I get weary of the noise the motor makes on mine and have been thinking about replacing it with a DC motor and PWM speed controller. I think a smallish DC power supply would fit under the deck of my Gemmasta 3 so relatively easy build I hope.

You could control the motor off the arduino running your encoder :) Just need a decent off the shelf motor driver and power supply.
We are a family of 4 from Southern Tasmania.

Guys, for a good 12vdc motor & driver try Motion Dynamics & get a 240vac to 12vdc convertor off the net. have modified 3 gemmasta's so far. All fits in underneath. Costs about $250 for bits then get a handy electronic/electrician to wire it all up.
