radioactive minerals
« on: April 18, 2017, 04:52:44 PM »
Hi
Can anyone explain the legal situation in NSW if you find any radioactive minerals whilst fossicking ie can you retain them?  Cheers.

One of our members Plutonium knows a lot about these more unusual minerals.  He would be the one to ask.

Geoff Parsons from Mineral Society of NSW would be another person to contact.
He is on their committee  http://www.minsocnsw.org.au/index.php/contact

He gave a good talk with samples of radioactive minerals at the meeting in February.

A number of people collect radioactive minerals. I even have a few.

Just need to store them safely and appropriately. :)

Think the only problem would be collecting nuclear grade material.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Yep, there was a prohibition on mining and prospecting for Uranium minerals in NSW.
The law on "Uranium Exploration" was recently changed.
https://www.australianmining.com.au/news/uranium-mining-a-step-closer-to-reality-in-nsw-2/
The occurrences of Uranium around NSW are rather trivial for fossickers. Anything you did find would be considered micro specimens.

There is no restrictions on owning radioactive minerals.

If you are fossicking and you find radioactive minerals, yes you can keep them. The law in NSW is about mining uranium, which is not allowed. You are allowed to explore for uranium deposits, but not mine them - go figure NSW govt.

Anyway, as plutonium said, there are very few places in NSW to find radioactive minerals. Plenty of locations over the border in SA and up north.
Cheers, from my little piece of the Australian Outback...

Found Bauxite in the 70's whilst doing a mining exploration, the spot was at Warri Gate, east along the QLD/NSW Border on the NSW side, first time I'd ever saw it little orange balls, we were looking for Silver, Lead, Zinc and gold.  The area that we sunk two hundred core holes is now Stuart National Park, damn.

Yes Gemster I realise that, once we got one sample out of a core sample there was many others, the other thing that we got a lot of was gold, there and at Mt Hay south of Tibboburra,  the Warri Gate gold is still there as far as I know.   The company I was assayer for was Cominco Canada, we didn't have a license to mine for gold at the time. bugger, um got a couple of little samples though Droo Droo
