Caring for fossicking sites
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:14:11 PM »
Hi Forum Friends,
My husband and I spent Easter Sunday , Monday, and Tuesday at Kookabookra, travelling out from Guyra each day. The water was a little higher than when we have been there previously and on Tuesday it rose more than 20cms over the period of the day. By the afternoon my morning sieving pile was inundated, obviously from rain overnight further up in the catchment.
People camping in the area while we were there left their campsites in pristine condition. However, there was a campsite that had been vacated before we arrived which had drink bottles  left buried in the sand, crushed beer can, parts of food wrappers  scattered about and worst of all, a  toilet paper roll and used toilet paper decorating the grass and shrubs.
The environment is full of animal dung and nature can handle an extra human contribution, especially if a shovel is put to good use. Toilet paper is a different matter! Even if buried animals and erosion tend to uncover it and it flutters around for a long time. As a Grey Nomad I am deeply distressed by the number of beautiful areas of Australia that are festooned with toilet paper. Surely people can place it in a  plastic bag and burn it in their campfire or take it with them and place it in the garbage.
I took out a plastic supermarket bag of somebody else's rubbish to dispose of thoughtfully. By the way, we did find some beautiful quartz jelly beans and a little topaz.

Thank you Gerda for doing your bit.  I know there are a number of ALF'ers who do similar things to clean up their local sites as well.  The frustrating thing is that these efforts should not be necessary except for those few who ruin it for everyone else.

Restricted access is an ongoing problem for this hobby and this kind of ridiculous behaviour is only likely to make landowners/managers consider closing another one off.  Please everyone, do the right thing for the benefit of all.  Thank you to those who step up and do extra.

cheers
Leah

beers to what Aussie said and well done Gerda.

Amazes me how lazy and uncaring some people can be.
Every thing from leaving rubbish and disposable nappies lying around to campfires left burning with rubbish, bottles and tins in it.

Some of these tossers can get very stroppy if told off so careful how you react.

Keep fossicking areas clean and safe if you want to keep them.  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Besides fossicking forums some locations are also posted on free camp and back packer sites.

So all up a lot of people notice them and sadly some people are shits.
