Looking for synthetic rutile rough
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:06:13 PM »
Does anyone know a supplier that stocks synthetic rutile rough? I've got an experiment in faceting design that requires a very high refractive index but may not be suited to moissanite on account of the material's strong birefrigence.

I'm looking for a piece around 15-20mm in diameter and 5-8mm thick, if you want a rough idea of what I want to use it for.

Hi Shifter55,
Please let me know if you manage to find a supplier?   I wouldn't mind trying a piece of this stuff myself if any is available.
Regards,
Ghost.

Glenn Huntly at Quality Gem Rough Supplies is the only one I can think would have it, I haven't asked him but I have looked when I have been to shows.

Thanks Rusted.
I shall ask him if he turns up here at Easter for the Gemboree.

Ghost.

I just had a look with Mr Google.
There's not a lot of it around at all, (nearly none)
I did find this in China that might be OK
http://www.weiku.com/products/10688765/Rutile_Rough.html

Minimum order 100 Grams, no idea of the price. It could be worth a query, I'm sure that it would be reasonably easy to divvy up 100G between a few facetors.

Hi Rusted,
I like the way that that site talks about strontium titan ate.
I wonder what strontium titan ate.   I just had lamb chops for tea.

Please let me know how your query goes.

STO RoughSTO rough is short name of strontium titan ate rough.
1. At very low temperatures, strontium titan ate exhibits piezoelectric and superconducting characteristics.2.Strontium titan ate also exhibits a very large dielectric constant.3. Strontium titan ate finds applications in varistors, while thin strontium titan ate films are used in tunable HTS (high temperature superconducting) microwave filters.

No reply from China yet, maybe they aren't keen on doing business with a non business, though I did call myself Bendigo Gem club, that sometimes works.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Rusted the lack of replies to emails seems to be the case for a lot of online suppliers now, a year ago when I was doing my own searching through Alibaba and even American rough sellers it was very difficult to get replies or have membership to newsletters set up.

Another supplier I have found is RusGems - online they are mostly selling rough hydrothermal synthetics. But on their Etsy they had a cut smokey rutile, and I got a brochure advertising rutile stones from them with some YAG rough.

While it's easy enough to google their contact info, the images are interesting. There's the light yellow tones you often see with rutile, as well as 3 grey tones that start at almost white, to silver, and finally the smokey brown seen online.

There's also two blue tones, which are interesting as those should counteract some of the extreme reflections that can cause paler rutile to appear dull on camera. And a black colour for those who really like their shiny cabochons.

None of the orange or deep red tones I've seen from other faceters, but if their boast about being able to offer multiple colours holds true there will be a nice selection to choose from.

Unfortunately as I am unemployed right now I can't really look into buying any, but this'll be a priority once more than basic needs can be taken care of.
