saw blades...which one to buy???
« on: July 02, 2017, 12:37:49 PM »
I am looking to buy a 14" diamond slabbing saw blade and want to know what the difference is between notched and continuous rim.  I understand the actual blade when I see it but how do you choose between them?  Which is the best and why do they make two different types which seems to do the exact same thing?

Notched is generally cheaper but I would go the extra for a continuous sintered blade. For general slabbing use, don't try go too thin either. Check out the general info on smart cut diamond tools website.

Dont get confused with the 301 Gemking type blades.

They are called notched but are a sintered blade - just with a rim designed with notches to increase coolant flow at the cut.  Is a bit confusing when you also have very cheap notched blades which although much cheaper will not last as long.

This blog article describes the main differences:

Thank you.  I have read all you suggested and it seems that the sintered rim blade is the one I will get.   Most helpful and informative links..........now all I have to do is "use it properly"................no water in sight.  I have done some research and it looks like baby oil is the way to go.
Cheers guys

If you want the best either a Highland Park blade or a Ukam blade. They are both professional industry quality blades.

Notched Saw Blades are primarily designed to cut harder materials such as Agate, Petrified Wood and Jaspers and have a longer life cutting these materials when compared to continuous rim. While continuous rim blades offer a smoother cut are better suited for the more valuable stone as they usually are of a thinner profile. Segmented Blades are used for larger diameter saws reducing heat and edge tension due to the large circumference.
