Hi Peoples,

Thanks for taking the time to read....

I've spent a bit of time in Thailand and have found a cutter that does a great job for a very fair price. It all seems to easy.

I'm looking to send parcels of rough from Australia, have them cut here and posted back to Australia.  Will there be taxes and duties to be paid?  I am aware of the theft/trust aspects involved but am worried mostly about customs duties/taxes etc in both countries.   Can anyone who has done this before shed  some light on the subject for me?

Many thanks,

Ben

I had a small parcel of sapphires cut in Thailand a while ago, I aid no duty whatsoever on them coming into Australia. I'm not someone getting them done commercially however and that may have some sort of bearing on the result there. Also the government was talking about charging a duty on all items coming into Oz that a purchased overseas (eg through Ebay). Not sure if that will affect any stones being cut over there, as you are already the owner of the stones. I'd make some enquiries with Customs to check.
Common sense isn't exactly common

The Government  idea about charging GST on Ebay has hit a snag.... China and others have said.. 'We will NOT collect Tax for Australia'... Sorry Mr H$#vy...
Ebay also stated 'If we have to do this, We will Block Australia and they will have NO Ebay.. Sorry Mr H#$vy....  ;D
I am following this very closely, as I purchase 90% of my goods on Ebay...

I know how People are saying 'Buy Australian'  But, Being a Pensioner, I can't afford to purchase in Australia anymore... ::)

Gday rockhound,
I know when sending stones to other cutters just label as mineral samples no commercial value. Not sure on protocol on return trip as it has been a while.
Hope this helps
Cheers

I've sent multiple parcels of rough to Thailand for cutting and never had any taxes at either end.

Agree that the parcel should be sent with a letter stating they are mineral samples of no commercial value.

Perhaps theoretically GST could apply if cutting costs were above $900 (used to be the threshold from memory).

I've had a few parcels opened by customs when they've come back to Australia but I've never been hit with additional charges or taxes. Think they're more interested in illicit substances and illegal items.

Cheers,
Fullerton

We once had a parcel of green tourmaline opened by a customs officer who were convinced they were emeralds and therefore much more valuable than the declared value.

As they did not have a clue what tourmaline even was, we did not think their identification of emerald was very likely  :D

We eventually convinced them that it was tourmaline as described and they let it through.  I think that was just one guy overstepping his authority though - I think he just got a bit excited at the pretty green rocks.

Usually stuff went through pretty easily.

cheers

;D The Customs Guys and Girls can be very forceful at times... Went through one day and they took my half empty can of Deodorant off me cause it was over the allowed weight.. When full... Tried to explain that it's half that weight now, but No you cant take it...  Hope it gave them the 'itchys' as it did for me ;D 8)
