Digging around Powell town
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:41:52 AM »
Hey everyone i recently had some luck and stumbled across a pocket of quartz crystals in the beenak and powelltown area, unfortunately 90% of the stones were heavily fractured or broken but some had interesting rutilations and I believe chlorite inclusions.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any luck digging out side the usual creek beds of that area?

Still sounds like a cool find!  Perhaps a pic in the Gallery of a few of the better pieces!

Yeah, Cohen I've found smoky quartz terminations in the hills around Powelltown - nothing spectacular, and mostly flawed, and I have known of others who have done the same.

I will see if I can get some good pictures!
Interesting it's in the creeks so it must be out there, I shall continue my search.

Cohen2, there are many creeks in that area that 'can' yield crystals. Unfortunately with them being in creeks mean that they have been tumbled and potentially damaged. Having said that, occasionally some nice stones do turn up. You just have to try enough creeks and sieve a lot of gravel. Happy hunting!

Cheers jamo I have had some luck with  finding crystals in the creeks before
but with my recent finds in the hills out side of the creeks I was just wondering if anyone had much experience with digging for pockets in the district :)

Cohen, I haven't left the creeks myself. I know of some who have found a few nice specimens digging. However, the trick is to be able to know what lies below the forest and leaf litter.

Many years ago l found some huge smoky quartz crystals roughly 6 inches by 10 inches but badly flawed nice door stops though and nearly flawless citrine fist size all around powell town mainly in rivers so keep looking.
