Glue not sticking to stones
« on: September 07, 2017, 09:32:51 AM »
Lately now that my polish is good when I complete the pavilion and try to set the stones in the cone dop I am finding my superglues are not drying completely even after 48hrs. So I started using tite-on which hardened fine but my girdle became out of wack no matter how much adjustment I tried with my cheater (this has never happened before using other glues and happened on both tite-on stones). Other glues that I have tried dry but the stones don't hold and fly off after a few facets. I mainly cut Topaz and Natural sapphire. Please does anyone have any ideas. I cant seem to master wax but would like to.

I'd be first looking at your transfer jig to see if there is any glue in/on it. Then, check dops aren't bent, zero your cheater.
I transfer with dextone or JB Kwik, and if i'm in a hurry put my transfer jig in the oven at about 40degrees for 15-20mins to fully cure it.
Also clean your stone with acetone before transfering, use clean acetone I've had problems using dirty acetone I've been soaking dops in making the stone not stick and come off.
You could try superglue gel but this drove me mad as it dries crystal clear and imo make it so much harder to see crown facets as you cut them compared to black epoxy.
We are a family of 4 from Southern Tasmania.

I have had my transfer jig and dops checked and all fine. But I was using acetone out of my soaking jar which has been there for some time so I will try fresh. Thanks this may be the cause.

Super glue is not very good for setting if filling space. IIRC moisture sets off the reaction but can run out of 'steam' before it's penetrated through thicker areas.
As MB says, I always grind a flat, table later, to attach the dop to cut the pavilion then transfer using epoxy, JB Kwik weld is my choice also the same as MB apparently.
Flying stones with dried glue is usually unclean surface. I use 100% iso propyl alcohol.
Wonky girdle could be the stone shifting in poor adhesive, softening wax, non zeroed cheater before starting, incorrect alignment of machine, bent dops and dodgy jigs and probably more.

What type of machine have you got? Do you hold the stone or the hand piece while cutting?

Marissa

I note you mentioned you may try dopping wax.

If you are a member of the Facetors Guild, see if you can borrow the old video of the session on dopping with wax.

Be careful cutting sapphires using wax.  They get hot during polishing and the wax softens.  Happened to m e the first time I tried to cut a sapphire using brown faceting wax.

Also happened to me cutting a small zircon to an oval cushion for my wife.  As I polished the girdle I needed to continuously adjust the angle adjuster.  Didn't work out why until I started cutting the Crown and needed to fudge the girdle.

The stone is only about 4x5 mm.  Would have been bigger with a square cut.  But SWMBO as Rumpole would say had her heart set on a Stuart Replica cushion AKA stretched SRB.

Kind regards
