Glen Innes area
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:46:56 PM »
We like free camping and are wondering if there is a good place to camp and fossick in the Glen Innes area and surrounds. It seems from my initial investigation that there only areas where you pay to camp and fossick. $30 plus per day. Have only just started fossicking for gems and am currently in sapphire area Qld. where we paid for a camping permit and a fossicking licence which is great. Found my first piece of broken green glass ;D and am finding it very interesting.

You can camp out at Kookabookra for free - search the threads here for directions but about 30km SE of Glen Innes.  Public fossicking area on a nice creek - no amenities as such.  It is a nice spot having been there myself.

Further away is Blatherarm camping area in Torrington.

Others may be able to suggest more area's.

Have seen people camping out at Wellingrove about 20 mins out on the Emmaville road. Has basic amenities.

What people do at Wellingrove and what the sign says can be totally different.
Click on picture for a clearer view.

Not even supposed to drive in which is a pain.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Yes, people I've seen camping at Wellingrove over several days don't drive in but camp on the side of the dirt road before the now refurbished signage.
Cheers,
