Beenak specimen id???
« on: September 30, 2017, 02:50:50 PM »
Hi so recently found some pieces of this dark lustrous mineral in the hills around Beenak,
I was thinking it could possibly be black tourmaline, but the shape of the stones has really got me scratching my head!
This specimen is around 5cm in diameter

any ideas???

It looks like limonite-goethite to me.

Interesting suggestion!
I was also thinking maybe cassiterite

Have you tried doing a specific gravity test on it? This could give an indication. Tourmaline is relatively heavy

Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

It could be petrified wood, I've seen it black/shiney like that in Tas.
We are a family of 4 from Southern Tasmania.

The weight is the key. Very heavy - it could be cassiterite. Medium weight - probably ironstone: goethite, hematite. Relatively light - schorl tourmaline. The lustre and striated faces leads me towards tourmaline. Depends on what the geology is like around Beenak, any sign of pegmatites or granites?
Cheers, from my little piece of the Australian Outback...
