Fossicking around Cloncurry

Hi everyone, just wanting some info on possible locations around Cloncurry to fossick for Amethyst. We are a family of 4, plus dog and can camp self sufficiently. Would love to go to Kuridala is this area open?

Yes, Kuridala amethyst should be open. Check in at the Tourist Info Centre for any updates when you are in town.


The other Cloncurry amethyst sites are the Qamby Zigzag (about 52km north of Cloncurry) and the Amethyst Castle (~140km south of Cloncurry).

Thanks Fullerton, do you know if you can camp at Quamby?

The Quamby site is just off the roadside but there's more than enough space between the road and fence for a comfortable camp. Yes, I've seen a few people camp there (about 50m off road) although most use Cloncurry as a base.


The Quamby material is mostly used for polished slabs, although cabbing of some of the material is possible.

Hi. Thanks, this info looks really useful. I am heading to Cloncurry from Karumba and really hoping to  find some amerhyst and perhaps garnets with my family. We are pretty amateur at this, and with boys with relatively short attention spans which sites you think you would shortlist. We rhink we will be heading west to Mt Isa afterwards. Also I saw a post somewhere about a site near Cloncurry that had malachite and chrysocolla. Does anyone know where that might be? Or alternatively if there are any tagalong tours/services that might be available in Cloncurry?

When do you expect to be in the Cloncurry area Gunyapuk?

Hi. We are just outside Cloncurry, and heading to the visitor centre for our first stop this morning. We are probably only spending the day, perhaps two if Im lucky! We camped at Zig Zig overnight, but hadnt organised permission to go on the property so didnt get to the fossicking area..nice spot though!

Hi Anne, you don't need property access for the zigzag quartz site ~7km north of Quamby. The site is on both sides of the road and readily accessible.

Relying on your advice via Frosty's blogs and the lovely lady at the info centre we have spent a couple od days at Amethyst Castle, Kuridala and Fullerton garnets and had a great time! Wish we had more time to go further west!
Might look around Anakie before we get to the coast.
