Stone ID please.
« on: June 30, 2018, 08:04:58 PM »
I have been finding a few of these stones lying around lately and have not taken much notice of them until I found one recently broken and this is what it looks like like inside. Found and broke another one and the same internal stuff.

They are only small, and quite sparkly inside, very easily broken. I was tending toward mini geodes, if there is such a thing.

Found in the Taroom area in a small on farm quarry that we use to grab road base for the farm. Red dirt with plenty of small basalt pebbles.

Any ideas?

Hi Bluey, I get the same type of stones down this way at Pambula NSW,  I have some pictures of them in my gallery.  Found heaps of them below an old volcanic vent, ranging from the size of marble to nearly baseball size, they have what look like agate inside them.  I also have found them in a Quarry with specimens of Agate and Carnelian.  I just call them mud eggs. beers

Cheers tinker.
Hard to show with the lens I have at the moment but the inner seems more like the crystallization in a geode rather than a solid inner like an agate.
I also find some Carnelian and thunder eggs in the area. Not that far from an old volcano. Unfortunately, all the thundereggs found so far have been solid rock, not agatised, ( and a fair bit of pet wood).

Taroom does have rhyolite in the area and looking at them they do look like little thundereggs with an agate geode centre.  Well done.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Would also describe the thunder eggs as over cooked.  :)
