Lithgow Tarana Oberon area
« on: July 20, 2018, 11:28:41 AM »
Hello all just curious as to where I can find that illusive Tarana amethyst
I have been to blue hills and Oberon area and got my fair share of Smokey’s
Apparently there’s crystals in Lithgow Hartley and Tarana area which I am yet to find any info on besides pictures of finds
Cheers

Was some in the the State Forest near Hazelgrove but it was blasted years ago.
Another spot which also had gold now private house blocks with concrete floors.
Best spot north of Oberon is also on private land and very much no trespassers.  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Hi Joey,

Jimnyjerry knows the area very well and has very good local connections so I can confirm what he says is from experience beyond online research etc.  I asked lots of questions about this a few years back.  General my conclusion was that apparently they do turn up occasionally but they seem to be random anomalies (and relatively rare anomlies) rather than there being a 'spot' you find more amethyst than smokey.

If you can find something more specific then good work!

I’ve got 3 state forests in mind that I haven’t looked at yet just a matter of actually getting time to go next trip I am going to check out a new spot where I had a chat with a lapidary club and apparently some was found there but the region is said to be pretty “Barren”

Probably Lowes Mount State Forest they were talking about.
