Gem Cut Studio
« on: September 09, 2018, 07:21:49 AM »
Has anyone tried Rej's Gem Cut Studio yet?  He released it about a week ago at the AFG seminar.

I'm currently playing with the trial version, it's quite different to Gemcad and seems easier to design gems on, especially where you are looking for a specific L/W ratio.

I still have to learn how to read the optimiser.

I've had GemCan for about 3 or 4 years and haven't used it much. Got GemRay about a year ago and haven't used that too. Have used Bobs Rock Shop Online Tangent Ratio Converter 20 or so times to change all angles for different RI. Need to practice a lot I guess to be good.
Ive only hear good things about Rej's Gem Cut Studio.

It is easier to use than Gemcad.  Both Gem Cut Studio and Gemcad will do tangent ratio conversions in a fraction of a second.  I haven't done it in Gem Cut Studio, but in Gamcad, click on the row you are changing (say the 42 degree pavilion row) to edit it, then change the angle and press Apply Edit.  The whole pavilion or crown will instantaneously change.

There are some threads on using Gemray, and Robert Strickland has made some Youtube videos on getting started with Gemcad.  Proof cutting a known design such as an SRB is a good way to start with both programmes.

If you are a member of the Australian Facetors Guild, have a chat to your local branch about learning Gemcad.

We have Gemcut and love it, do a lot of design tweaking for changing Ri etc. It's an awesome piece of software particularly with it's real time render imagery.

Aye, it is pretty good, particularly for challenges like the one Paul Sabota put in the Facet Talk.

Question, to run Gem Cut Studio, what does was one require in computer grunt? Massive graphics, orrrr?

The reason I'm asking is the OH is thinking of getting me a laptop next because I don't really use all that a computer can do, I mainly use pdf's, surf the net, alter the sizes of pics, surf the net, chat on forums, surf the net... play Dynamite, surf the net..lol.
BUT, then I'm also possibly looking at utilising vids to show stones and maybe play with something like Gem cut Studio.

So what amount of computer grunt is needed, can a lap top handle these things?
I can't remember Rej's forum name to shoot him a pm.
Keep em comin!!!

Make sure you get a 1080p screen, I have a laptop with a high res display and it is horrible from Gemcad and GCS. Grunt helps but is not necessary as you just turn down the resolution of the renderings to speed things up.  I think Rej forum name is Rej.

I'd say get the one with the best, fastest processor (CPU) you can afford. A fast Core i7 processor around 3.5-4.0 GHz is usually pretty good. The slower i5's are ok, but sometimes struggle.'
Keep em comin!!!
