Help pls...
« on: December 24, 2018, 11:21:09 AM »
Hi... a few days ago I was asked if I knew anything about rocks or crystals - I responded that I knew amethyst was purple. Long story short, I now have a bunch of crystals/rocks and am clueless. My neighbour has a book of crystals and has told me what she thinks, but I would really appreciate any help to identify. So far between my neighbour and google, we are thinking; calcite (the orangey and clear white) green selenite, tourmeline, rose qu, artz, picture jasper?... your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

(I just read a post about attaching too many pics... so, will post a 1 and others to gallery)

Hi desertrose and Welcome to ALF... Ok going by your pics in the Gallery I have made some guesses.... Others may have a better idea but at least I have tried... Are the ones I suggested 'Selenite' or 'Calcite' very Delicate ?
There are some fine examples there and would be cool in any Collection... Are you Selling any?

Those Green Crystals come from a mine in South Australia they are Gypsum (Selenite). I can't remeber the name of the mine. Datrev help!!!
From what I have read the green is caused by Iron and not as you would think Copper or Nickel.

Thanks for replying... Gemster, the large orangeish colour one and others like it aren't delicate for the most part and are actually quite solid - with the exception of the small crystal crust like stuff  (apologies for my lack of proper descriptive terminology) However, the green you commented drusy quartz that has a small stick in it, is ridiculously delicate! I am trying to just not touch it and leave it be. These were all from some mans collection, according to his son he had collected for 60 odd years but passed away last year - son did not want to keep them anymore. I would like to sell, but need some honest advice and guidance on everything from what they are, estimates on what they are worth, how to package safely etc... so, posting here is my starting point. I have a few more outside, just sorting out 1 tray at a time so will upload when Im done - thinking its more of the same calcite/selenite just different colours... white, clear, browny gold, theres a black rock with very shiny silvery surface...

Hi Rusted - Im in Whyalla SA so I guess it makes sense that the green are from SA. My neighbour found what looks identical on ebay listed as from Pernatty lagoon Mount Gunson.

No worries post your pics up when you can...
I wouldn't mind buying a piece of the Green Selenite and some Mookaite and if you can, put something like a coin or something so we can get an idea how large they are...
I think you need 10 posts before you can PM(Private Message) so, post away and I can PM you with My offer....  ;) I have sent you a PM, just to see if you get it and can reply... :D

Mt Gunson yes that's the one.
The Gypsum crystals grow fairly quickly on bits of stick in springs in the area, I have seen sheep skulls and old boots all crystal covered.

The piece with the stick in it has a different crystal form and is soft and crumbly.   Might just be Halite (Salt, NaCl).

Merry Christmas All.

Thanks for your responses everyone...

This is the largest piece of green selenite I have - 22 pieces all up - I dont know if bigger necessarily means better though? Can anyone give me a rough idea what this is worth pls...

Gemster, I will send you pics of all 22 for you to take a look at... and the jasper rocks soon too

Rusted... I cant think of anything better to improve a sheep skull or old boots

DesertRose,

You may find it interesting to google "green crystals" and "selenite" and you will find plenty of images. If you google "selenite cluster specimens" you will find plenty of dealers from ebay to specialist specimen dealers offering items which will give you some idea of the range of pricing.

As for value. You can have a theoretical value but then where do you sell it and where are your potential buyers? Depending on the quantity and where you are, you could consider taking a stall at one of the gem club annual shows. Once you have some idea of values you might also look at approaching some crystal-rock shops but they of course will be looking at wholesale prices as they have to make a profit. Ebay might be worth a few postings and see if you get any responses.

I am sure members of this forum would be interested in you later giving an update on how you decide to go about selling and the outcome. Good luck,

Hi harryopal... thanks for your response. Ive been busy with 4 kids and school holidays - sorry for a late reply. Yes, Ive relied on google for a bit of an idea and attempt to identify - also, some members here have been helpful. Ebay is pretty much my only option, unless members here are interested to buy. My main concern with listing on ebay is simply not being able to identify correctly, but then there is not knowing how to pack/send, what  price to ask... anyway, Ive photographed, numbered and weighed about half so far, and hopefully the link to my dropbox album will work for members here to view. Im a bit overwhelmed to be honest, but getting there...

This is the link to view some pics Ive taken so far... I am intending to list on ebay, so if anyone could be bothered to comment what they think a piece is worth to give me an idea, that would be great. Alternatively, if youd like to buy just make an offer.

Theres a lot of jasper in this lot... wondering are they all the same type? And the black ones, are they all just tourmeline - some have silvery (almost looks like aluminium foil on them lol)... others have specks on them?
And #30... what is it pls?

Thanks again

Desertrose

If you are going to take photos of your specimens and put them on the internet, probably not the best idea to use one of your bank cards as the size indicator.  I checked to make sure there was only the back part but you really need to edit those and take the signature and CVV out of the pics.....  If you accidentally post another one and it has the front of the card visible then you will likely not have a great start to the new year.  While we are all lovely people here at ALF and wouldn't spend your money on you, others online absolutely would and putting photos of your bank cards online are unfortunately just asking for trouble.

Otherwise, good photos and good luck with the auctions.

Philip

It's hard to give a value, I suppose they're worth what someone will pay. For example, anyone that knows me knows that I don't do specimens, if I can't cut it and polish it, I'm usually not interested. So for me, they wouldn't be worth that much. I think with specimens though, it boils down to rarity and quality of the individual piece. While your collection presents well, I'm not sure of the rarity of the items, but the quality looks pretty good.  Knowing where the specimens came from and what they are would be important as well, that's generally what I ask first when looking to buy any stone. Ebay is probably a good start for selling, but be sensible with your reserve, if you want to sell don't set it too high. Also be careful of the packaging and posting of what look like fairly fragile items, take that into account when quoting on postage as you'll need a lot of protection around them. Sorry I can't help with individual pricing, I'll leave that for those with more knowledge of this type of specimens. Good luck.
Common sense isn't exactly common
