  Just a heads-up...Be careful up at Lamington NP... The Police have been taking down Number plates up there and at another area that is on Army Property near-by... Collecting Evidence for Prosecutions at a later date I have been told... They Know what is going on...

Welcome to the forum triptamean. Not the normal welcome though and with some explanation you might understand the reception. Over the years we have all seen fossicking areas closed off to us by the deeds of some that are not as innocent as you, in other words deliberate over collection for either personal or monetary gain. As a lot (including myself) are quite passionate about the hobby it is upsetting to see another area closed to us. Unfortunately there are a lot of different government departments that seem to be keen on closing these areas, mines departments, aboriginal lands departments, national parks and state forest authorities and some of the political parties themselves and it appears that some don't need a lot of ammunition to start another war against us. What you need to understand is that national parks particularly are no go areas for anything other than walking in and taking photos of, no digging, removal of anything (flora, fauna or inanimate material), even driving in them (4wd) can be banned or restricted. Even fishing is outlawed. This is usually outlined in some signage at the entrance to a national park.

Anyway, I agree that the stone you found is most likely chalcedony lining a hollow in the stone. Chalcedony can come in more solid forms and can produce a lovely gemstone when cut and polished. Yours is too thin for that and is a nice specimen only. I would suggest that if you're interested in furthering your interest, find your local lapidary club and join, they are usually a wealth of information and most have the equipment and knowledge to cut and polish anything you may find.

Thank you for that! I feel well-informed now, and also respected. I would love to join a lapidary club. There is one near me, I just haven't been yet. I would also love to go on hunts with people to find stones. Obviously in legal fossicking areas

Not meaning to upset you so apologies if you took my remarks the wrong way. I thought the reference to appealing to the high court about your conviction was so extreme that it was self evident that I was joking.


So, don't give up. The rock was identified for you and there is lots of useful information if you persevere.


I will resign from my position as prosecutor and I doubt that you will get the death penalty.

I actually didn't know what NPWS stands for, nor that a single stone is not allowed to be removed from a National Park. Your assumptions are judgemental and quite hostile. You may want to reconsider your approach, and not treat me (and others) like crooks. But thanks for the heads up and the information.

Sorry if I came across Harsh.. I am very Passionate about my Fossicking and Protecting our Hobby and Industry for future Generations... I feel that People just don't realise just how serious this situation is...And how quick Government departments can close areas or make changes to laws, as has happened before...
   I will never 'Reconsider' My approach towards Illegal Fossicking/Mining.... Things like this have to be stopped... As explained before, These are the exact things We are up against in our fight to keep places open for future generations and to get new areas opened up...
 NPWS, Mines NSW and other Gov Departments are watching these Forums to gather Ammo to be used when the likes of NAPFA are trying to change things for the better and keep getting hit with comments like this that happened at the last meeting between NAPFA and the Minister...

Most of the things going on are related to Victoria and NSW, but ALL other states are watching things unfold down south very closely and when Prospecting and Fossicking Committees try to have new areas opened up or to keep areas open, they get hit with the same thing as NAPFA has...
 There is a Movement at the moment across  all of Australia to Lock-up areas and close the Bush to Every-one FOREVER, Fossickers, Prospectors,4x4 users, Fishing, Camping, Scouts. Every-one.. this Movement must be stopped... Have a google Re: United Bush Users Group of Victoria, PMAV and NAPFA and see what those poor Fellas are up against... In Victoria, Their State Gov wants to close or restrict up to 80% of the golden triangle and turn it into a National Park, Killing off Small towns that rely on Tourists, Fossickers ect  There is also lots of info on this forum and others regarding this...
 If I saw you doing what you did on-site, I would still be the same.... Harsh but We need to  Protect what limited access We have ATM...

And after 2 Deaths at a popular Swimming Hole/Illegal Fossicking area on Army land in the Gold Coast Hinterland last year, things are not looking good for these areas now... People have been Trespassing for years and it is coming to a point that Fines/Charges are going to be handed out to those who choose to ignore the Signs... I wouldn't like to be charged with, 'Trespass on Federal Land' or ' Illegal gathering of Protected Items in a National Park' or what-ever they want to charge you with...

Yes I can see you are indeed very passionate and protective about all of this. Good on you, there is obviously a lot going on out there that I am completely unaware of. Especially the thing about the government wanting to restrict the bush from ALL users. That is insane that such a thing is even being considered. Far out. I doubt it would ever take hold though, there would be SO much backlash from the general public and from people like us who freakin' love the bush.

Botryoidal chalcedony on basalt with minor agate ... nice specimen and a good start to 'fossicking'.

I don't think Lamington National Park will suddenly implode from this breach but best to focus on finding rocks outside the national park in future.

The Governments on all levels WILL do as they please.. In Victoria they have admitted that exact thing... One quote from them is that they think there is only a 'handful of retirees using Detectors out there' Oh how wrong they are ...
  I noticed you have been on PA and there are a lot of Topics on there on what is happening down there... NSW state Gov is waiting for the outcome down south, That's why they are stalling NAPFA in their quest to Improve things for all... QLD is also watching very closely... It is not good if it  happens...

 Hill End is also having Issues with NPWS and the gov wants these small towns to shut down as then, they don't need to spend $$ looking after them... I will send you a PM and We can chat further on this if you like... I noticed you are on the Goldie, So am I, so may-be we can meet up over a beer one day to discuss the ''state of affairs" in the world of Fossicking and Prospecting...
