Locations for gemstones near Geelong - Ballarat
« on: March 10, 2019, 12:41:51 PM »
We are from WA and are currently in Port Campbell.  Looking for suggestions for any good gemstone locations around Geelong to Ballarat Areas.

Welcome to the forum, Malcolm.
I sure others will be able to help more, but Mortlake Quarry is a great place to visit.
They look to have a new webpage aswell.http://www.mortlakevic.com.au/olivine.html
We are a family of 4 from Southern Tasmania.

There's not a lot of fossicking around that area, unless you are looking for Gold.
Apart from Mortlake you can find Volcanic bombs on any of the volcanic cones in the Western district of Victoria most contain Olivine but getting a decent gem piece is a bit harder. Very nice Smoky Crystals at Mooralla at the southern end of the Grampians but these days you need to dig.
