Cooking Matrix Opal
« on: April 01, 2019, 11:41:09 AM »
Learned colleagues, I have recently came into some Matrix Opal from Winton in Queensland, It is the raw material and I have been told, to get the colours to come up in the stone.  You either have to burn it in sugar or in a light oil, is that correct, I was  previously told that you use sulphur acid and sugar.   Any advise would be much appreciated. beers

Tinker,

It's a good thing you asked, Opal is generally considered heat sensitive.  I wouldnt burn it and would talk to an opal specialist before treating it.

Hi Tinker,
I have some of that opal that needs treatment but haven't got around to it yet. I came across the following
 http://illawarralapidaryclub.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Heat-Treatment-of-Opal-in-Sandstone.pdf
and it provides excellent info how to go about treating the opal. Basically you have to preform your material then treat it and then final polish. Let us know how you go

Regards Pito

The opal from opalton(near Winton) I think they call it fairy opal(in sandstone). I was told to form to rough shape and soak in superglue then polish. I'm not sure you cook it like he andamooka opal.

Makkeybrown

beers the fellow i purchased it off said, that he either places it in cooking oil or light machine oil and heats it in the oil for four hours or the other way he does it is to put it in a tin full of sugar and heat it until the sugar burns and this apparently gives him good results.  He comes from up near Winton and said that he learnt this off some of the old timers.  I was just curious as to whether anybody else had heard of this process, as the only one I had heard of up to now is the sulphuric Acid and sugar.  I'm going to give the oil a go this week and see what results I get.
Thanks for the info mate, cheers

The matrix from Queensland is called fairy opal matrix much different than the matrix from Andamooka, the rainbow matrix from Andamooka is Similar to the fairy matrix, the fairy opal can be cooked in olive oil then heated or cooked in olive oil then heated to around 400c to turn the matrix black, cut the stones to a pre polish the same as the Andamooka matrix cook in olive oil a crock pot is great for this it has hi and low setting, after cooking the fairy opal in olive oil cook the fairy opal in a kiln or wrap it in foil and place it on hot coles to cook the olive oil and turn the stone black.
