Obriens, Agate Creek and Moonstone Hill

Hi All just had a fun weekend with the Cairns Lapidary club at Obrien's creek over Easter (along with 600+ at the camp!) Very hot!    Nice haul of mainly clear cutters and a couple of pretty blues too. Second last day there, we managed to score 2 small specimen grade aquamarine. So not too bad overall.


Next its off to Agate Creek for the next 7 days to look for pretties! Anyone have any suggestions on which areas to check out first. I had heard that different sections of the fossicking area tended to produce different colours. Apart from agate are there any other pretties I should be keeping an eye out for? and where to find them (just general info not secret spots)?

You can just about forget walking Agate creek (the creek) and Spring creek, they are cleaned out.  If you have 7days there's plenty of opportunity to look around, just follow your nose. Have a fossick in the reject pile at the camp (if you are staying at the first camp) there are plenty of rejects with good stuff in them.
You will also find nice Jasper, Chert,  Quartz crystals and Thunder eggs.

A few people have suggested that digging is also worthwhile and can produce better specimens than just specking (I have a digging machine that doesn’t mind the heat....runs well on home cooking and beer

Chat with everyone, a lot of people will help. Last visit I had a good hole that was producing crystal and I was able to trade days in other people digs.

Digging is really the best way to do it, as Makky said chat to people, they are a great mob and don't mind too much giving a bit of free information.

Blackbird try black soil area or the potato patch at the bottom of Bald Hill. Will be up at Agate Ck later in May.

Oh and watch out for the mining trucks on the gravel roads
