gem rough Darwin to Broome
« on: May 04, 2019, 08:13:28 PM »
HELLO I am going from Darwin around to Broome, What I am looking for is gem rough in between these places. Any locations to fossick or stores shops etc to go to would be appreciated. I am looking for both faceting material or normal grinding rock.
 THANKS Grumble

Hi Grant, when you're in Kununurra, try and search out 'the Rock Doctor', not even sure if he's still alive but if he is, he had (in 2012) a cracker collection of agate from the Kimberley area some of which is comparable to Agate Creek. There is also amethyst in the area but I'm not sure if the quality is for cabbing or faceting. Other than the Rock Doc, I can't recall any gem shops (other than Argyle Diamonds) in that area.

The zebra rock place is just out of Kununurra and has a caravan park, cafe etc.

Diamonds , Garnets , Agates ( in the loose alluvials ) can be found below the diversion dam . Try Buttons gap . Fossil deposit across the river . Fishing can be good too , but always !! watch for the snapping handbags !!!!
A boat is essential for the best agates that are right at the bottom of the reach on the left hand side .
All the gullies/creeks in the area produce Agates . Middle ck , before the halls ck turn off , is a perfect example , but they tend to be in total nodule form & are hard to find .
Good luck

I did do a bit of specking while up that way last (2012) but without a bucket of water to wash potential agates, it was nearly impossible to pick them out in creek beds due to a covering of red dust/mud. I would suggest some form of water spray may be of assistance, similar to what you would use at Stratford in Victoria.
