1500 Carat Rough Emerald
« on: July 04, 2019, 05:12:47 PM »
Hi All,

I have a 1500 carat rough good quality Emerald. So far I have contacted at least 10 auction housed in Australia and abroad and they say the only accept finished stones. I am looking for suggestions how get most out of it. I dont know where to start in terms of cutting it. I am looking for a premium cutting service, as the value depends on cut.
Any help highly appreciated.

Thanks

Where are you roughly based?

Will it likely produce lots of little stones or are there likely to be some bigger ones you intend to maximise to sell to say the real premium market in China?

FYI I know we'd all KILL for a pic to be put in the gallery!  ;D

1500 ct rough emerald of facet grade? I'd love to see a pic of that.

Do you know the provenance of your emerald specimen? Has it been reputably identified and certified including if it's treated or natural? These factors could have a significant bearing on current and post-cut value.

Hope it works out for you, could be an amazing piece.

Hi Guys, thank you for replies. I just added a picture in gallery, also attached a picture with the post.
The origin is Afghanistan and its 100% natural, not treated at all. I am looking to get it certified from GIA.

That is a cool stone!  Pity about the cracking but still lots of good stone there by the looks!

How's it look in natural light (not backlit)?

The colour is pure green and it has good clarity. Any one with a rough idea of how much it can worth? Also should I try to get it cut in one big stone or more than one smaller stones?

A couple of articles which show why you need to get it certified before any hope of a valuation.

Note it is considerably smaller and more flawed.

I checked with GSL and they said they told me they dont have infrastructure to test that big stone. So I am wondering how can I get GIA to test it as they dont have offices in Australia.

You could try measuring it's specific gravity. That would give at least some indication. :-\
