Threaded Shafts
« on: July 07, 2019, 05:36:50 PM »
Hi,
My first post I am a 78 yr old who has just started in this great hobby of gem stones etc. have joined a club to learn and now want to set up something at home. What I want is a cab station with 1 expanding wheel and 2 other wheels maybe diamond or silicone carbide until I learn. I have 2 1457 rpm motors both have straight shafts 1 with a key. I would like to get a rod threaded at both ends one right one left that I can put in pillow bearings and then buy all the bits and pieces. Cannot find the rod in Australia with a non threaded bit in the middle. any ideas. Apologise for the length of post.

Get the left hand thread nut first so the engineering shop can fit the thread to the nut, Usually a good bolt and fastener shop will have them in stock if not they will be able to get them in.
Left and right hand threads are easy to cut so you shouldn't have a problem finding a place to do it.

I made mine from 1 inch shaft just to keep things nice and solid, there's a fair bit of weight spinning around when you fit a couple of wheels and a expanding drum.
Go for the diamond wheels, the plated ones are relatively cheap and outlast several silicone carbide wheels also not as messy.

Further query, would 2 bearings support a 1 inch shaft (presume it needs to be that thick) with say 6 inches of thread each end I want to run an expanding wheel one side and 2 diamond 1.1/2 to 2 inch wheels the other side. Thought maybe an18inch length shaft should be long enough. Maybe I only need a ⅝ shaft. What are your thoughts please

I made a six wheel setup with six expanding drums, that's quite a long shaft,  supported with two pillow block bearings in the middle. It did take a bit of mucking around to get the drums balanced on the shaft.

You don't need six inches of thread each end, just enough for the nut and a bit extra for good luck will do. Pack it out with spacers if you need to, you will need to get spacers made for between your wheels anyway.

The hole in the wheels is 1 inch and they come with various bushes so whatever you want to do will be OK.

You aren't going to pay heaps more for material bearings or machining  to go to say 3/4 inch.
