Magnetic toppers for Master laps
« on: February 19, 2020, 04:48:26 PM »
Hi. I am wanting to put a new magnetic topper on a flat lap and was wondering what thickness of Magnet is suitable. I can get from .3 to 3mm thick.  Just wondering what the thickness of magnet everyone has on theirs?

I actually haven't used a magnetic one, but was of the belief that the magnetic surface is already attached to the topper, if you have purchased one. This just means that you need a steel master lap as opposed to an aluminium one. I stand to be corrected on that one though.

I use my share of toppers (8" & 6"), and have never seen the need to use a magnet or the PSA backing that is optional on some toppers.  I just "drop" the topper onto the master lab and start working.

The only exception to above would be when using a Lightning Lap topper.  Per Marsh's instructions just apply a fine mist of water on the master before installing the LL toppers.  Of course, you'd want to use an aluminum master, as steel masters wouldn't like water applied directly on them.

I scored mine with my original faceting machine, I think the bloke that owned it bought every gadget known to mankind.
I thought it was a good idea at first, then gradually came to the realisation that it was just something that didn't need to be there, the nut has to be done up anyway so why bother.
