Silly question...
« on: June 28, 2020, 08:02:48 PM »
Gday everyone,

Is there anyway to tell the difference between a gemstone and a piece of say brown beer bottle pulled out of a river? Or am I better off assuming the worst?

Cheers

Moh's hardness test can be used to identify mineral specimens - have a look at this web site to get and understanding of Moh's test https://geology.com/minerals/mohs-hardness-scale.shtml. Looking at you sample unfortunately for you  it looks like glass to me. Did you go to the gem/rock display located just in the caravan park in Nundle - Tourist info place- they have information of fossicking spots in and around Nundle.

Thanks for the input pito, I have been staring at it, walking away only to come back later and stare again. I saw some photos of zircons and a couple looked similar so I got a little hopeful.

The information centre was closed due to COVID but the lady gave us a couple of rough maps for the state Forrest and a warning about some strange types around, which I found out about first hand.

That bit was found on the bank of the peel river in an area others have been looking. Even if it is a bit of beer bottle it’s still the first bit of colour we have found and honestly the rush has us hooked!

Cheers

Hi,

That would be a very unusual shape for that size of a zircon too.  Pretty positive it is glass I'm afraid.  Everything about it screams glass without actually doing a test.

Well pito and MrSydney were on the money. I tested the specific gravity and came up with 2.75 so it is consistent with dense glass.

Looks like I’ll have to make a trip this weekend and find the rest of the bottle ;D

Those semi circular grooves in one of the pics certainly indicate from a bottle. Keep sieving.
