I think he buys it at Aquarus, about 25   euro for 100 carats, but I suppose he buys it in bulk.
Here is the link:

I have a bit of a collection of cheap chinese diamond powder from doing my soft wheels. 100ct seems a lot for a 150mm diameter wheel but only about $10 from China. I sure it's not as good but for roughing in why not. It would be the same as use on most of the cheap plated laps.

You sure it's not CZ?, lol.

Is he still making them to sell Giel? Price?
I've been thinking of having a go making my own using this two part epoxy putty from Bunnings. Sets apparently rock hard with 24hr cure time.https://www.bunnings.com.au/deks-1l-two-part-epoxy-jointing-putty-compound_p4987228
I wonder how similar the 800 is to my 800 sintered. The Flower of Life design I just cut is frosted using my 800 sintered lap if you want to compare roughcreations, stone size is 19mm for reference.

My other lap project is putting a 2-3mm layer of tin on some of my copper laps.
MB

Keep us updated on your progress with the lap making Makky, I have collected a few pewter tankards from Op shops and I have been toying with the idea of turning into laps. The tankards are a nice bright shiny pewter and high tin, I have a few old bits that are the grey sort, bashed up old vases and things, probably higher in lead so might not get used.
I don't really need new laps, just need a new project to keep me thinking.
I'm thinking of getting a 150mm hose clamp and put it around a old copper lap so a ridge sticks up a few mm, clean/score/flux the surface. Put a bit of 1/2rod in centre hole. Sit on bbq(perfectly level) and heat flat out, apply tin and heat more with blow torch. Let cook on bbq till 250-300degreesC. Let cool, machine.
I have some copper laps I don't use anymore, an aluminium topper could work aswell. Thoughts?MB

How are you going to do the final pressing? Seem to remember reading that tin laps are pressed, like 200t, at the final stage to compress and consolidate the tin so it doesn't flow as the material is soft. Interesting to see how the experiment work.

Just got an email from Bert. He checks this forum once in a while, but is not a member, as his english is not that great.
He said he still has some 20-28 micron diamond powder left over from the last batch of laps that he made.
He paid 9 eurocents per carat. He said he can send it to australia if you guys want to try it out. (guess that would be 10 US for 100 carats)
He told me that he can also send it along with Stephens laps, he will put them on the mail on monday.
Just shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Guess I'll find out as 20t is a long way short of 200t :) Your pewter should be a harder than straight tin so I'd be surprised if there were issues. I might not get around to doing this for awhile though. Have you got a picture of your more shiny pewter compare to the likely higher lead content ones to give me an idea if I visit some ops shops.CheersMB

This is the cheapest on aliexpress but only goes down to 320grit. I think the coarser grits were a bit more expensive when I purchased them. Unsure on what postage times are like atm. I would not use this powder for pre-polish or polish.

Mixing up two posters together there. No problems.
The old beer tankards are bright silver, and don't go grey. the older vases etc are dark grey. The newer pewter pieces have the percentages of what metals they are made from stamped on them, the older stuff just has a hallmark type thing which I suppose would tell what it was if you looked it up. Look for soft stuff, so if it's bent at all it's probably good. The stuff that doesn't bend is probably plated.

Newsflash: I have successfully achieved Fusion in my garage
Finished my Fusion 49 pavilion with a Classic Fusion crown (Andrew Brown's first book) using the new ebonite diamond disks. Weighed in at 36.7ct, 19.4 x 19.4 x 15.7mm
BTW, did I say how much I liked the Fusion concept? 1-fold mirror image symmetry in a square design!

You can see the superglue transfer remains on the top of the crown

You can see the contrast between the 200 grit finish and the 800 grit finish in these pictures.

These ebonite disks have really assisted me in the cutting process of this large stone, no fuss - they just  cut quickly and predictably with a uniform finish. No nasty surprises, kind of like a touch of yesteryear.

Hi guys, regarding pressing laps, Clarry Trevena has been using a bearing metal composition for his pewter laps, by leaving a decent casting button he has avoided the need to press the lap to change its crystal structure.

Otherwise you could use a backing plate with holes drilled into to for the tin layer to key into.this may reduce creep.
Yours Sincerely
Flash (Gordon)
