Oberon and Uralla
« on: October 13, 2020, 08:24:48 AM »
Hi,

I'm a first timer heading to Oberon on Thursday and Uralla early next week to have a go at some Fossicking.

Oberon Area - I was thinking of going to Sapphire Bend or Duckmaloi in Oberon. Any specific spots worth exploring?

Uralla Area - I'm planning on the Wooldridge Reserve. Any suggestions on specific spots?

Cheers,

Justin

Welcome to the forum JustinSt. While I'm not familiar with the areas other than by hearsay, I would suggest that your question on 'specific areas' may not be answered specifically. Most fossickers (not all) if they find a good spot, are a little protective of giving the location away, particularly on an open forum. Having said that, I would expect someone with more knowledge of the area may give you some direction as to where might be a good spot. Generally look for somewhere that hasn't been dug, and be prepared to dig a lot depending on the area. One area I go to on occasion in Victoria, some trips produce materia,l other trips I've shifted a couple of cubic metres of gravel for nothing but the exercise!
Common sense isn't exactly common

Welcome to ALF JustinSt.  :)
There is really only a small area at Sapphire Bend.  Has been heavily dug since it was mined in the 60's.  Best bet would be to walk through from the front (sign) as far as the dried out depression at the back.  Make sure you have your State Forest Fossicking permit with you and watch out for snakes.  Have a dig down and look for the gravel layer and indicators like blackjack. You might also come across Tex digging in the forest, good for a yarn.  You might also like to try Porters Retreat down the road.
Duckmaloi is on private property

Uralla, have only stopped overnight and never dug.  Try to find a spot in the stream behind some rocks.  This location is also still worked by fossickers so you might meet up with some.  Gold tends to be fine to flour.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Uralla the main area seems to be a large granite rocks and bar you can't miss where another big gully joins in.  When you come in go straight ahead initially and it will take you to the main dirt car park area where you can easily access the water and it is just to right of where you hit the river.

You'll need to get down around the rocks a bit - try move a few things - and dig down.  you can find a bit of gold, you can find small sapphires - I saw one (very) small but super nice sky blue, you can find nice clear quartz (generally water worn), and red garnet I believe of better size (pretty positive it's not red zircon but doing this from memory).

You can explore further down the river but I haven't done that as only been a few times and had kids with me.
