Sapphire Rough
« on: October 15, 2020, 09:43:16 AM »
Looking for a chunky (as symmetrical as possible) good piece of sapphire rough around 7 - 8 carats to cut a square cushion 6 - 7 mm (about 5mm deep). Looking for a lighter colour yellow/green into blue or parti with no cracks or inclusions in the design area. Any suggestions please.

Shop around the wholesalers mate, if I had a piece that size I'd be cutting it myself, also look in the Lapidary sales groups on Fakebook. Glen Huntley could be a good start

Thanks - just might have sourced a good piece @ $35 - 40 p.ct.  Last year I happened to speak with a lovely lady and brilliant cutter, Cindy Kelly, at the Anakie Gemfest ( she took me through wax transferring). I picked up on some potential rough from a Miner at Rubyvale and Cindy specialises in cutting sapphores and is very experienced and kindly offered to examine 3 stones of his and critique them for me (as well as offering advice on the best method of maximising colour display) - all 3 stones are good quality and between $350 and $415, its a pity I don't have the 'ready' to buy all 3.

BTW the stones come from Tim Patek (Tims adventures on Youtube) who has a mine at Beacon Hill, Rubyvale.

Cindy is a very well respected cutter up there, I've seen a lot of her cutting, does top notch work, she's a Sapphire specialist and family have their own mine/s.

$35-40 pct is a good price for quality material, bigger stones can often ask much higher than that.
