The Photo-Atlas of Minerals - Version 2
« on: November 22, 2020, 10:07:09 PM »
I purchased this DVD soon after it was released just over 10 years ago and it has worked fine on my Windows XP Computer for many years.  I have upgraded to Windows 10 through Windows 7 and have recently decided to retire my XP computers.  A problem has become apparent in that the program will not work on Windows 10.  I have tried the obvious things like contacting the publisher of the CD and Professor Google without success.  Is there anyone who has experienced the same issue and who has solved it?
Kind regards,

Bruce

Sounds like your DVD/CD is recorded in a format that Windows 10 doesn't recognise. There's not many it won't but there is some. You need to find a codec that you can download to add to your medio player on Windows 10 that will play it or reformat the program into a common format like MP4. Can you see the program on the disc at all? If so, the file should appear with something like a name of number followed by '.xyz'. This will be the file format. Most likely '.avi, .voc, .mkv' or similar.   You then get onto google and see if you can find one to download and add to Windows Media Player or Microsoft Film and TV so that it can play it. The microsoft store may be able to help you.
Common sense isn't exactly common

It's probably a small programme that gets installed to run the CD not working on later versions of Windows. My father had a similar CD with a Rose encyclopedia on it, there was no way it would work under later Windows versions.

Thank you for the reply.  I have sent a request to Microsoft and don't expect a reply.  You never know I might get lucky.

You could try running it in window xp compatibility mode or install window xp on a virtual machine.

Be wary of someone ringing you saying they're from Microsoft though, lol.
