PRiVATE PROPERTIRS FOR FOSSICKING NSW ?
« on: January 28, 2021, 06:06:46 PM »
Hi I am a newbie to fossicking and enjoying the great outdoors.  Is there any properties that one can go to by permission or in group arrangements to fossick.  Live in Sydney region and have been to Glen Innes a few times so after something closer... no luck in Oberon in Vulcan.  Learning to navigate through this site.

Cheers
Rosie

Hammor1, welcome to ALF. There is Billabong Blue a paid dig out Inverell way, check their web page and facebook page. Look up Minerama that has a few field trip out of Glen Innes happening in March (on line booking).

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Hi Hammor1,

It is hard to get on to private property unless you know someone.  Some people are brave enough to approach people on their property, provide ID etc and ask for permission -  but due to public liability in particular most of them have been warned off allowing this and don't necessarily want a stranger wandering around their property in general.

The main way to access private property is organised events - such as Minerama in March that Jimnyjerry mentions.  Also Gemorama on June long weekend (search up Facebook group page).

Billabong Blue has both a pile of dirt you can sieve - great to learn on but you have to be very lucky to find anything decent.  But you can fossick elsewhere on the property including a large creek area - which is a lot more work but you can genuinely find good stones.

I've also struggled to have much luck at Oberon in the public area's.  You have to get lucky and generally put in some hard work, but I have seen good stones others have found.

It's like looking for gold.  Most miners / prospectors never strike it rich.  But being out in the bush or in a creek, being present, its just a great break from modern life and we all love living in hope of a good find!  Every now and then you get lucky with something that keeps you going!  ;D

There are private properties around the area where you can camp or they offer accommodation, when you stay they also offer access to their creek frontage for fossicking, Bullock Mountain Homestead is one I know and love.

Hi Dihusky,

Out of curiousity have you had any good finds are Bullock Mountain Homestead?  I've always heard it was pretty heavily worked over, but beautiful spot irrespective!

I have stayed at 3 waters down the road, but not sure if it is still open.

Feel free to PM if if you'd prefer.

We didn't work 'The Pile' but moved up & down stream and worked the banks, found plenty of small stuff and a few larger cutters but they tend to be few and far between. Garnets, Sapphires, Quartz it was all in the pan. It's the old thing, look for the locations the general lot won't walk to.

Didn't have a lot of time working the ground while we were there as we had trips booked in with Minerama.

I didn't know Bullock Mountain did 'the Pile' thing - I thought that was only Billabong Blue?  That would still be good for the kids if they did.
