Where to find gemstones in Victoria
« on: December 15, 2023, 04:19:42 PM »
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum although I have been reading it for a couple of years now. I was wondering where I should go for some fossicking.
I've been fossicking for about half a year now and have been to all the famous places (Beechworth, Powelltown, Mt Shadwell etc) and am particularly interested in blue gemstones/stones as that is my favourite colour. Do you have any suggestions on where to look?
Thanks
Manficat

(Sorry if I made some mistake and posted this in the wrong place)

Manficat welcome to ALF.  For modern modern information try "Gemstones in Victoria" by William Burch and Dermot Henry, published by Museum Victoria, it is a great book and well worth getting. See link https://store.museumsvictoria.com.au/products/books-mv-gemstones-in-victoria
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

There are Sapphires found all over the place in Victoria (supposedly) I have never found any. A mate got some decent Sapphires from around Beechworth, though they were quite small, but good gem quality. The Museum Victoria book gives the good oil on where to look.  I have seen a blue Topaz from a stream in the Granite country between Lancefield and Tooborac area. Again I haven't found any Topaz though I did get some nice Citrine and Smokey.

So I went down to the club (Essendon Lapidary Club) and it turned out that they have this particular book. I read through it and made a shortlist of places to visit for sapphires. Does anyone know if any piece of Tubbarubba creek is on public land? Thanks

The creek is the one that crosses the road at Nullavale, not sure of the name though. Probably Nulla Vale creek.

during the 1970's 80's i collected many gemstones from mollisons creek, nullavale.many are now in the melb museum as cut stones, cut by me. you  can find some in the book gemstones of vic on page 153.the current owner does not like people scratching around in the creek.ive been there a couple of times this year but i did not find much.to much sand and heavy weeds hide the stones.if i was you i would take a trip to reedy creek eldorado still nice stones to be found . good luck.

That's good to know swirly, we went there with the club many many years ago which is why I was light on details.

I've tried Eldorado but its well known and quite a fair hike for me i was at strathbogie last week found one blue bit but it was really fractured and about the size of a fingernail. i can understand why you're vague on details as farmers don't like people walking around their land. also im a
member of diamond valley gem club if you wore wondering.

Funny you mention that Swirly, I had a mate who used to own a deer farm around Eldorado, he reckoned there was an outcrop of amythyst in the area but unfortunately, his farm was raised during some bushfires in the area in the 80's and he walked away from it. As a result, I didn't get the chance to get up there with him. Last time I checked out Reedy Creek (many moons ago now), I shifted a mountain of gravel for no result.
