West to Oberon
« on: April 27, 2017, 06:55:41 PM »
We are heading out to Oberon early tomorrow morning, for the day. I am hoping someone could suggest a creek spot reasonably easy to get to (due to the short day trip and no 4x4) we have been out to Black Springs (Vulcan Forest) twice, it was a physically demanding spot, head to toe in mud, but produced.  ;D ;D ;D

Just past Black Spring forest is Porters Retreat.  Creek spot not in the forest so less muddy.  You can get the map to it from Oberon Tourist info centre and / or search for Porters Retreat here.  It is just a bit further down the main road and only a few hundred metres off - though there is an initial steep slope that can be slippery if it has just rained.

There are other spots like Native Dog creek but general concensus is they are much more heavily worked over and potentially harder to reach.

If you search in the gallery you should be able to find some nice pics of stones from Porters.  Wasn't mined the same way the forest was years ago so you have more chance of finding bigger stones is also my understanding.

Thanks MrSydney and Baldy,
Firstly we tried Native Dog Creek, no good, has been worked over too much. Went back to Black Springs, we had a shorter day, so less finds. But we came back with one nice clear light blue dog tooth and a smallish sapphire. Next to no water and a lot of hard physical digging. We are paying for it now. Clear clean fresh air for the day then back home to the southern suburbs of Sydney. We will wait now for warmer weather to head back there. Thanks again for your suggestions. ;)
