Where to purchase opal - without being ripped off
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:58:25 PM »
Hi people, it's been a while since I last posted.  I'm still enjoying making jewellery for myself, family and friends.  A girlfriend recently asked me to recreate a pendant she lost some years ago.  It featured a blue opal.  I'm happy to do it but as opal isn't really my favourite stone I though I'd seek your advise on how not to get ripped off purchasing one. So much opal seems to be sold at exorbitant prices I really don't know where to start. I've been through a few of the mining areas over the years, cooper pedy, mt Isa,  lightning ridge but am not sure I'd get a better price there than in a city based store or online ( and there's HEAPS of online sellers!).  I keep thinking I've found one then freak out at the price  :o. I'm happy to pay for a quality product but am feeling very naive with this!

So I'm hoping you can give me some pointers on where to look so I can be comfortable I'm not being taken for a ride.

Hi Emmaline,

Focus on businesses that are selling opal to the trade or local population. International sellers or tourist markets are most likely to have elevated prices
Gemshows are a good place to start. There's usually one a month in our larger cities. Go have a look and compare prices. Gain an understanding of what types and colours are most valuable.
Unless you know the seller I'd generally avoid buying opal online, its unlikely to look like its photo and may be prone to cracking, even after the Paypal claims period is over.
I'll PM you a couple of business card details from a few opal dealers I met at a show. That might point you in the right direction.

Cheers,
GR
