If you have the ESP32 you might aswell use it I'll send you a link to the screen and ardunio library I like for it tomorrow. It is a serial connection and only a few wires are needed.

I found ST7920 serial screens work fairly well and are easy to wire.

You can probably get them cheaper from China but watch out for gst being added.

That screen is a simple one that works and can display graphics(like large fonts), there are also lots of simple character based displays available as well.
