Places to fossick in the Northam WA region
« on: September 23, 2012, 11:12:54 AM »
G'day

We love rocks of all sorts. Literally. Have done for years.

We are about to visit Northam WA for a few days and notice, according to some old literature we have, that there are quite a number of areas where various types of gems can be found.  There are different things we will be doing in Northam and surrounds.

We have purchased a WA Miners Right and would really like to fossick in the hope of finding some gems.

Trouble is, fossicking is a relatively new thing for us and we don't know how what we should do to locate these areas and to keep legal in all aspects.

We do know not to trespass on mining leases or private property without permission and to backfill any holes we might dig, plus the usual don't leave any rubbish behind and leave gates in the state you find them.

Knowing where the mining leases and private properties are is a problem.  Being we will only be there for a few days, we feel "public" places would be easier.

We are wondering please if you could give us a bit of advise.

Very many thanks in advance for your co-operation in this matter.

Jollycosy, if you send me a PM I will email you a map of the Notham area with sites marked for you. You should be able to locate some tourmaline, garnet common opal and rock quartz & maybe amethyst in that area. York also has some good fossicking and you can ask at the York Inf centre about permissible sites. All sites will probably be along the Avon River route or on Mt Mackie, Mt Hardey or Mt Dick.

Geology Rocks, I really dig it.
My rocks are gneiss, don’t take them for granite.

Many thanks chookie2.  I presume PM means our email.  It is jolly-cosy1@bigpond.com
We would truly appreciate the map you are talking about.  We're actually going to Meckering today and hope to do a bit of fossicking on the way back.  Tomorrow we would like to spend the day fossicking.
Do you have any other maps in regard to fossicking.  We are gradually going right down to the bottom of WA and will be including some trips inland a bit, particularly to where the big trees are.  Hope to have the chance of looking for more "rocks".  THINKING of having a look around the Menzies area.
Then heading off on the Nulabor into SA.
Tried yesterday to get some maps off Tengraph.  Don't know if its my age or whether its just too complicated for the "normal person", but I couldn't bring up the type of map we obtained at Mount Magnet.
Once again, many thanks, and we now look forward to receiving the maps.

PM means Private Message here on ALF but have sent you an email with map attached.
Will check on what I have for down south - do you mean the  Albany/Esperance area? Don't have anything for that area.Check a museum they will know. The Coolgardie/Kalgoorlie area and Norseman have a few areas worth fossicking - besides gold of course. Will email the maps to you.
