need to saw in tiny space
« on: December 07, 2016, 04:51:16 AM »
My problem is that I have to saw some sterling silver on a piece of jewelry that is only a few millimeters thick and the saw blade(or whatever will work) can touch what is on either side of the thickness that I have to saw.   So it is going to be a tiny space that needs sawing and I can't think of anything that will do it.    I can't drill because a drill would be too thick.   Any ideas?

I'm not exactly sure from your description what you are attempting, a photo would make it easier. Though getting a photo of something that small might not be.

What are you thinking of using using to saw it with?  Jewellery saw blades can be very fine, Its the same story with drill bits, you can get drill bits that go in your dremel down to extremely tiny sizes. If you need to buy tiny drill bits buy a few, you will break some, and use the fastest speed you can get on your dremel.
Another option may be a tiny burr in your Dremel.

You may have to dissassemble the piece or fabricate a new one if you can't fit an 8/0 blade in the gap.  They are only about 0.15mm wide.  Your smallest drill bit is about 0.2mm.

I can understand your dilemma if you are using saw blades from Bunnings.  They are too course for silver under 1.5mm wire or 1.2mm sheet.

I saw a lad try to trim an 0.3mm sheet backing on a bezel using a No. 4 blade some know it all sold him.  His wirk looked like it had been under a lawn mower. A 6/0 blade cured his woes.

Saw blade sizes range from
4, 3, ... 0, 1/0, 2/0, ... 8/0.  Good all round sizes are 2/0, 4/0 with 6/0 for finer wire 0.8mm down and sheet < 0.6mm.
