Hi Andrew.  The travelling time from Port Melbourne to Powelltown is approximately 1hr 35 min using the Tollways. Andrew, bare in mind that you'll have to be driving across town and so the traffic will be unpredictable.

We will be arriving in Melbourne early on the Saturday 20th June on our way to Harts Range, it's would be tempting to do a trip if it just happened to be that w/end you were all going fossicking but probably shouldn't and head west instead of east.

Thanks All - just getting back into fossicking after many years.  Used to do lots when I was growing up, now getting back into it with my kids!  It's great to have resources like this now!

These bits came from the amethyst dig site at Lowmead. Nice vibrant orange but I've never yet found one that is of faceting grade.

Geez, the colour on that thing! In spite of the cloudiness and inclusions you could probably still make a decent if small step cut stone out of it, though it would look a bit like a faceted piece of hard candy.

In three hours time, I knock off for a month. If we get a few days that aren't too punishingly hot, I intend to go for a few digs there. One day I'm hopeful I will find a bit that colour that I can actually facet.

Awesome colour Lefty. Are you going to try and cut one or are they a bit cloudy? If you want to escape the heat Lefty, weathers pretty good down here

I actually cabbed a piece Andrew, it's quite interesting looking. Vivid orange and badly fractured but fractured in such a way as to create a rainbow pearlesence  through the stone. Quite unusual. Sort of like an orange opal.
