Cutting Slabs - looking forward a service
« on: November 23, 2021, 10:05:39 AM »
Hi there, I have just joined this forum.
I am a (new) mosaic artist.
I have inherited a  (limited)number of rocks & minerals, eg. A piece of mooakite about the size of a large toaster, a lump of zebra rock, etc). I would like to get these sliced into slabs, so I can then chop further as I see fit, with my mosaic tools (notably hammer/Hardie).
I am trying to find where I can get these cut. Of course, I would pay for the cutting.
I Am in Sydney.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Thank-you.

Karen

Welcome to ALF Kmunce.Best chance would be through a lapidary club.
Since you did not say where you are here is a general listing http://www.lapidaryworld.com/clubs_australia.html
There may be other clubs if you google via state/territory

Welcome to the forum. Initial slabbing try a local lapidary club. Once slabbed look at a small cutting machine like those at Aussie Sapphire at less than $200  way better than a hammer.

Sorry did not spot you are in Sydney.  :-[
Here is a listing of lapidary clubs for NSW https://gemlapidarycouncilnsw.org.au/clubs/
When you get them sliced make sure you specify how thick you want the slices.
Do you plan to polish the pieces as well?

Thanks,no I don’t want them polished, just sliced/slabbed - I want to use them in their natural state.
I did approach the list lapidary club to me - they thanked me for my interest but did not approve my application for membership as they said my interest was too narrow

What? There's a club in the business of going out of business.

Kmunce keep looking, most clubs are happy to cut rocks for a fee.

Same as a lot of clubs having issues with kids.
Kmunce, Welcome to the forum. If your rocks are small and you don't mind the cuts a bit rough you could buy or hire a tile(wet) saw and slice them up yourself.  But the finish will not be as good when compared to a large power fed lapidary saw and the cuts wider if using a tile cutting blade.
You could finish it by grinding/polishing the mosaic using resin granite/concrete polishing discs on an orbital sander. Or even put a coat of clear epoxy over it.
If you have time I'd like to see a pic of your mosaic when finished :), I have often thought of making one of two myself.
CheersMB

That was so narrow minded of them  :(

Yep, there will me more than one club in your general area. I wouldn't knock back any new members to our club, narrow interest or not, most members with narrow interests tend to widen them when they see what can be done. I also surprised they just didn't offer to slab them for a price.
Common sense isn't exactly common

Oops, apologise for typos in previous post - I was trying to say: does anyone belong to a sydney based club, that would be willing to slice/slab some rocks for me, for a fee? If yes,, pls provide contact details. Thanks.

most clubs are shut till at least some time in January or even February so it might be a while before you get a reply.

If a person interested in mosaics approached our club, I think they would be welcome.
Potential future workshop manager in mosaics!
