Polishing with sintered lap
« on: July 29, 2023, 10:27:37 PM »
Does anybody have experience polishing  facets with a 50000 or finer sintered lap.
Experience good or bad.
Currently polish with diamond powder and oil on a tin lap.

Welcome to the forum Wookie,
I'd be betting that tin lap would be more forgiving. Are you looking a sintered metal or those resin laps that aren't really sintered but some are calling them that ?I know a couple of people using the resin laps to polish, and they seem happy with them.  Not sure if I'd use them on sapphire.

Was looking at the metal ones as sold by Cut and slice rubyvale.
Looking to streamline my process and not mess with powder and oil.

The Rubyvale Cut and Slice ones are resin laps from the website info. I have a coarse 80 grit resin diamond lap that I got elsewhere, which is very good for cutting and nicely made. Hadn't considered that the finest ones might do a polish. I would be interested in anyone who has tried this, too. Holds some promise.

Been a while since I've been on this forum, moving to the bush and renovating the cottage takes time, anyway.....

Following the gist of this thread, back in 2020/21 there was a lot of interest in some sintered style laps being produced in the Netherlands, a few of the gang purchased some and I was wondering what has happened with these, they would have had plenty of use by now.

Are they still available and are people still using them?

I am using mine happily, and love them. They are not really 'sintered' in the true sense of the word as the matrix is a type of rubber. They work like new after a couple of years of hard use.
Bert Smit in the Netherlands still produces them (at least as far as I know), If anyone wants his contact details either message me, or search for user 'Bert' on this Forum.
