« on: September 21, 2018, 01:30:09 AM »
Hi Just joined. I am planning a trip to Broken hill soon and was wondering if is is possible to still find opal in the tailings around White cliffs and when does the hot weather settle in? Thanks in advance.

You might after a heavy rain but being so dry I think things will be well picked over.

Make sure you ask permission if you want to speck on a claim and watch out for mine holes.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Be especially cautious about exploratory holes, these are basically a 600mm wide posthole drilled down to as far as the rig can go, 10 or 15m is usual, so often just flat ground with nothing but a deep circular hole, bloody dangerous.
Not just White Cliffs either, I have come across these things everywhere someone wants to find whats down there, so all over the place.

Saltwater, you probably already know this but the other big watch out visiting opal fields is to get excited taking photos and stepping back to get the shot you want without looking behind you first ..... and bugger me... you're thirty feet down an abandoned shaft.
